Gods, Demigods and Demons: A Handbook of Greek Mythology

$20.48

"Gods, Demigods and Demons" is a concise, yet wide-ranging handbook of Greek mythology that promises a vivid introduction to the great myths of ancient Greece. Here are the gods of the Olympian pantheon. Here too are the demigods, demons, heroes, and many of the best-loved (as well as lesser-known) cycles, fables and nature myths. The entries, always readable and informative, convey the significance of Greek mythology and its place at the core of Western culture. They evoke the majesty, as well as the all-too-human foibles, of the Greek deities and their acolytes. Whether they find themselves caught up by the single combat of Hector and Achilles before the looming walls of Troy; or find themselves transported, like Odysseus, by the haunting song of the Sirens; or are thrilled by the quest of Jason and his Argonauts for the fabled Golden Fleece – enthusiasts of myth and ancient history will discover many richnesses to enjoy here. "Gods, Demigods and Demons" is both a helpful guide and a one-stop resource that can be consulted again and again. It will prove an indispensable companion to the world of the ancient Greeks and the gods they worshipped.

Excerpt from book: INTRODUCTION TO THE GREEK MYTHS TO proceed immediately to the narration and discussion of the myths of Greece would be much like an attempt to construct a high road without a survey. We must first of all make certain that we know what a myth is, and such an endeavour to give sharp definition to our theme will naturally lead to an investigation of the special conditions which, like soil and weather to a plant, favour the germination and growth of myth. Then, granting that myth has some connexion with religion, we must inform ourselves as to the peculiar nature of the religion and the gods of Greece. By such a course we may perhaps be so fortunate as to reach a point of vantage from which we can gain a clear and comprehensive view of the unique character of the Greek myths. Once this has been gained, a series of pertinent questions will present themselves, and these we shall enumerate and discuss in their proper place and order. /. What is Myth? We wish it were possible to define myth satisfactorily by an epigram; to say with Marett, for instance, that it is "Animatism grown picturesque." But, unhappily, epigram is a definition only for those who know, and this circumstance limits us to the use of cold analysis. For the purpose of ascertaining the elements of myth let us regard it from the points of view of (a) form, (b) time, (c) subject-matter, and (d) relation to fact. (a) It is commonly stated that a myth, in order to be a myth, must be cast in narrative form. A little reflection, however, will show that to make this a hard and fast rule is tantamount to rejecting not only the epithets applied to the gods by their worshippers, but also the attributes accorded them bypoet, priest, and artist. This we cannot consistently do (and, moreover, no writer on mythology ever d…

Bulfinch's Mythology

Bulfinch’s Mythology

$9.99

For almost a century and a half, Bulfinch’s Mythology has been the text by which the great tales of the gods and goddesses, Greek and Roman antiquity, Scandinavian, Celtic, and Oriental fables and myths, and the age of chivalry have been known. The forerunner of such interpreters as Edith Hamilton and Robert Graves, Thomas Bulfinch wanted to make these stories available to the general reader. A series of private notes to himself grew into one of the single most useful and concise guides to literature and mythology. The stories are divided into three sections: The Age of Fable or Stories of Gods and Heroes (first published in 1855); The Age of Chivalry (1858), which contains King Arthur and His Knights, The Mabinogeon, and The Knights of English History; and The Legends of Charlemagne or The Romance of the Middle Ages (1863). For the Greek myths, Bulfinch drew on Ovid and Virgil, and for the sagas of the north, from Mallet’s Northern Antiquities. provides lively versions of the myths of Zeus and Hera, Venus and Adonis, Daphne and Apollo, and their cohorts on Mount Olympus; the love story of Pygmalion and Galatea; the legends of the Trojan War and the epic wanderings of Ulysses and Aeneas; the joys of Valhalla and the furies of Thor; and the tales of Beowulf and Robin Hood.

The Eternal Drama: The Inner Meaning of Greek Mythology

The Eternal Drama: The Inner Meaning of Greek Mythology

$22.48

Zeus, Aphrodite, Apollo, Artemis, Athena–do the gods and goddesses of Greece have anything to say to us that we haven’t already heard? In this book, based on a series of his lectures, the eminent Jungian analyst and writer Edward F. Edinger revisits all the major figures, myths, oracles, and legends of the ancient Greek religion to discover what they can still reveal–representing, as they do, one of the religious and mythic foundations of Western culture. Building on C. G. Jung’s assertion that mythology is an expression of the deepest layers of mind and soul, Dr. Edinger follows the mythic images into their persistent manifestations in literature and on into our modern lives. He finds that the gods indeed continue to speak as we grow in our capacity to listen and that the myths express the inner energies within all of us as much as ever. Heracles is eternally performing his labors, Perseus is still confronting Medusa, Theseus is forever stalking the Minotaur, and Persephone is still being carried off to life in a new realm.
